What the job actually involves

Most of the shell driveways that fail around here failed because somebody backed a truck up and dumped a pile of shell on bare dirt. Six months later it is sunk into the sand, spread across the yard, and growing weeds. The shell was never the problem. The prep was.

Why shell instead of concrete

Cost

Shell runs a fraction of what poured concrete costs on the same footprint. For a long driveway or a wide parking pad, the gap is thousands of dollars.

Speed

Most residential driveways go in within a day or two. Concrete is a week of forms, pour and cure before you can park on it.

Drainage

Shell is permeable. Rain soaks through instead of sheeting off into your yard or the street, which matters on a lot that already holds water.

Repairable

A rut or a low spot gets raked and topped off. Cracked concrete gets cut out and repoured, or lived with.

It fits here

Shell is a Gulf Coast material. It looks right on a Florida property in a way that a slab of gray concrete does not.

No cure time

You can drive on it the day it goes in. Nothing gets taped off, nothing sets for a week.

What it costs

There is no single price for a shell driveway, and anybody who quotes you one over the phone without seeing the property is guessing. What moves the number:

Also shell, rock and gravel for

Parking pads and RV or boat pads. Side yards that will not grow grass. Walkways and paths. Drainage areas that stay soggy. Fence lines and equipment areas on commercial properties. Same crew, same prep, same edging.

Common questions

How long does a shell driveway last?

With a real base and edging, years. Shell settles and packs over time, so it wants a top-off every few years. That is a small job — nothing like resurfacing concrete.

Will it wash out?

Not if it is graded and edged. Shell washes out when it is dumped flat on dirt with nothing holding the sides. Crowned and edged, it stays where you put it through a Florida summer.

Can you put shell over an existing driveway?

Often, yes. If the base underneath is still solid, a regrade and a fresh layer brings it back for far less than starting over. That gets decided at the walkthrough.

Do I need a permit?

Depends on the city and whether the work touches the apron at the street. Redoing shell on an existing driveway footprint is usually straightforward. If the job runs into the right of way, that part gets checked with the city before anything starts.
